“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us,” the Palins said in the statement. “Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.”

This news--known all along to the McCain camp--was released to extinguish insane rumors flying through the blogosphere that the Palins' son, Trig, is actually their grandson, and Bristol is his real mother.

Disgusted by the degree to which such nonsense was beginning to gain momentum, the campaign decided to fight lies with truth, despite the fact that it was no one's business but the Palins.

No doubt the lefties think this will somehow taint the Palin candidacy--but that would be a gigantic misreading of the Dr. Dobsons and Phyllis Schlaflys that have jumped on board since Friday. For Christian conservatives, the Palins have responded exactly the way they should. Once again, the Palins demonstrate that they don't just talk the pro-life talk; they walk the walk, as well, even when it is difficult, embarrassing, or (as in the case of their decision not to abort little Trig) risky.

How the Democrats react to this will be interesting to watch.
