Read It And Weep: The GOP Still Loves the POTUS

As reported in USA Today, a February 9-11 USA Today/Gallup poll shows that Republicans remain fans of George W. Bush.

Although the President’s overall approval rating still hovers dismally in the high thirties, among those who call themselves Republican or (more importantly) “leaning Republican,” his approval rating soars to 76%.

And, not to twist the knife in our anti-war correspondents here, but you should also know that fully 72% do not believe that the war in Iraq was a mistake.

Despite the media’s best efforts to tell Republicans that they are falling apart, that they are riven with strife because such luminaries as Chuck Hagel disagree with the president, and that President Bush is a lame duck with no power—the facts continuously show otherwise.

The interesting point to take from this, when looking at the 2008 election is this: should the GOP find a candidate more like Bush than the current crop, the dominance of Bush-fighting McCain and issue-crossed Giuliani would most likely evaporate.

Kansan Sam Brownback has all the right positions, but no one knows his name. Mitt Romney, too, could be a good candidate for that 76%. There is plenty of time left in the race (unless they run out of money) for those two and others to present their credentials to the GOP base that still awaits a satisfactory choice.

These numbers give the very strong indication that a credible GOP candidate would do well to avoid the shift to the left that the media is aching to see.

Kerry,

Unless Bush solves the Iraq war (which I doubt), Democrats have nothing to worry about. All we require is the 30% of the party that aren't in denial.

And I would be careful about the title of your articles. Seeing POS made me think you had had a remarkable awakening.

I can only hope you're right. The thing is, democrats and independents are the ones who bring Bush's rating so low. If the GOP chooses another Bush, he'll get his ass handed to him in the generals...unless the dems screw up in their own inimitable fashion.

Haha nice one!

""Seeing POS made me think you had had a remarkable awakening.""

"Haha nice one!"

No, I think you have it confused with P*V*S (Persistent Vegetative State.) The only "POS" I know of--other than President of the United States--is "Point of Sale."

Always looking to the left, without realizing how far to the right you are, and it's the media's fault. Dr. Phil might tell the prez that he done run us off into the ditch. We're pass due and need a good driver.

Dr. Phil would slap the taste out of your mouth and tell you to quit taking your stupid pills.

Oprah would probably like you, though.

You actually think this is twisting the knife? Are you dillusional? Let them eat steak!

"Dr. Phil would slap the taste out of your mouth and tell you to quit taking your stupid pills."

I welcome it, if it would eradicate the reoccuring neo-nut bile.

I know the photo posted on MSN of Cheney almost smiling, along with the headline "Cheney warns Al Quida Regrouping", was a crop from the Cheney-Musharraf photo-op. But it was close to sinister, as if he has some deep-seated S&M tendencies he's embracing. He's had a scowl on for months (even through X-mas) and now he smiles. This is of the same making and logic as cheering besause the presidents #s are in the basement. And you think Dr. Phil would slap me for telling the truth?

Kerry,

Excluding those in sales, the only people in America who would confuse POS with anything other than piece-of-shit, are those in a PVS...which is where the far right seems to be most of the time.

Here I was giving you credit for being clever, when really you were just being predictably, tiresomely vulgar.

Nonetheless, I have changed the headline so you need not worry about being tempted to sink any further into the profane.

Sinister? You think that photo looks sinister? I guess you've probably not seen the thousands of smiling Cheney photos that have poured out of the White House press office, going to private individuals having their pictures taken with the Veep.

Your ability to read into things borders on phenomenal. Are you any relation to Miss Cleo?

POTUS? Why not just write the whole fucking thing out? You're so good at writing a lot! I clicked this thread thinking the POTUS was some kind of horrible thing that I've never heard of.

I'm no king of acronyms so pardon me for being so ignorant: since when has "POS" been the acronym for President of the United States? It seems that the GOP really still does love the Piece of Shit.

"POTUS? Why not just write the whole fucking thing out?"

To match "GOP," which I also didn't spell out. It's a headline.

"You're so good at writing a lot!"

Thanks. I try.

"I clicked this thread thinking the POTUS was some kind of horrible thing that I've never heard of."

Sorry about that. POTUS is actually an abbreviation we use around here quite often. I think it originates with the military, but I don't know. I do know that it's fairly common usage. We also use "SCOTUS" to refer to the Supreme Court with some regularity.

Smiling, was sinister. Sinister, as in smiling because AQ was regrouping.

Nope, no recent smiling photos of Dick sent to me. I get plenty of mail from the RNC but no photos.

You know, my first car was a real POTUS...an 84 buick regal. I could barely get the thing to the garage much less to work. That was a car that not even the GOP could love.

"Smiling, was sinister. Sinister, as in smiling because AQ was regrouping."

Um, no. I think he was smiling because he was having his picture taken with the president of Pakistan. Posed pictures usually involve smiling--whether you want to or not.

"You know, my first car was a real POTUS...an 84 buick regal. I could barely get the thing to the garage much less to work. That was a car that not even the GOP could love."

You must be younger than I am. An 84 would have been a good car not too long ago.
