"I am here to break some news," Bush told the White House press corps in the briefing room. "I have asked Tony Snow to be my press secretary. Tony knows many of you already. He agreed to take the job anyway."

Although one might think he's likely to regret that decision, the immediate response of media Democrats like Lanny Davis has been positive. It is said that the choice of Snow, who--Democrats are quick to point out--has been known to disagree with President Bush, ushers in a new era of openness and decency in the White House.

Tony Snow is, by all accounts, an honest, decent guy. Lanny Davis was quick to distance him from Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham, contending that he is not part of that "hateful" contingent on the right, that he disagrees with the president, and that he's much "nicer" than they are. Not to put words in the spokesperson's mouth here, but I'm quite certain that Snow himself would be uncomfortable with such divisiveness, as he numbers Rush and Laura among his personal friends.

Nonetheless, we have here an interesting moment in the newsworld. The network that Democrats once vilified (and some still do) as partisan hacks--lying, untrustworthy, blinded by ideology, journalistically undertalented--has produced a man that Democrats can't say enough good about today.
