Woolsey's Disgrace At the State of the Union (UPDATED)

Cindy Sheehan was the guest of Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-CA, at the State of the Union last night. Woolsey said "I'm proud that Cindy's my guest tonight...she has made a difference in the debate to bring our troops home from Iraq."

Sheehan was subsequently detained and arrested for charges relating to her wearing of a T-shirt with an anti-war slogan to the speech and keeping it covered it up until she took her seat.

Cindy Sheehan will face the consequences of her actions, but what about Rep. Lynn Woolsey?

Season's ticket holders for major sports teams are responsible for the conduct of themselves and their guests. In the past few years we've heard of a few cases where someone's season's tickets were revoked. Rep. Woolsey deserves similar treatment.

She too must take responsibility for the actions of her guest. While it may appear to be a bit extreme to demand her resignation as a US Representative, the minimum punishment owed to her is to take away her privilege to attend any joint session of Congress, including the State of the Union, at least until President Bush finishes his term in 2009. In the very least, her ability to invite guests should be taken away permanently.

Whether or not Woolsey knew Sheehan would behave the way she did (and I for one believe she probably isn't that stupid to think Sheehan would not have behaved that way), she should still be held responsible for her actions. Sheehan obvious has no respect for President Bush, and her actions show she has no respect for the office of the presidency either. The State of the Union is not about showing respect for the man behind the presidency; it is about showing respect for the office of the presidency, regardless of who holds it.

I would equally hold in contempt the shameless Democrats who for the second year in row interrupted the State of the Union speech last night with cheers after the President said that his Social Security reform did not make it through Congress. This was just as disgraceful as last year's interruption after the President warned of the soon to expire Patriot Act. Such reprehensible behavior is not welcome in the Capitol.

The Jawa Report calls for the impeachment of Rep. Woolsey.

UPDATE: Apparently, Sheehan was not the only one who left the State of the Union last night...

The wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Indian Shores, told a newspaper that she was ejected during the State of the Union address for wearing a T-shirt that says, "Support the Troops Defending Our Freedom."

Beverly Young told the St. Petersburg Times that she was sitting in the front row of the House gallery Tuesday night when she was approached by someone who told her she needed to leave.

She said she reluctantly agreed, but argued with several officers in an outside hallway.

Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said Young wasn't ejected from the gallery and she left on her own. She couldn't provide additional details.

So is there a difference between Sheehan's being detained and arrested for wearing a shirt that said "2245 Dead. How many more?" and Rep. Young's wife being asked to leave for wearing a t-shirt that said "Support the Troops Defending Our Freedom"? Absolutely, but I would have to say that both instances were justified.

According to the latests reports, a Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said police warned Sheehan that such displays were not allowed in the House chamber. Sheehan did not respond, however, this is an important fact regarding the proper decorum for the event.

Frankly, the sanctity of the event of the State of Union merits a bit more tact than wearing a t-shirt with a slogan. Plain and simple, doesn't matter what it says. That said, the intent of the messages that were either ejected or asked to leave were different, and the intent of the messenger were quite different. For Sheehan, her intent was clearly malicious, and would have likely disrupted the State of the Union address with completely disregard and disrespect for the office of the Presidency. Rep. Young's wife, however, had no malice, she was just not adhering to the proper decorum of the event, and she left voluntarily.

So while I agree with the Representative's wife's message, I disagree with her method. I also certainly disagree with Cindy Sheehan's message and method, and she should be penalized appropriately, along with Rep. Lynn Woolsey.
