Harriet Miers Withdraws Nomination
Fox News is reporting this morning that Harriet Miers has withdrawn her nomination for Supreme Court Justice.
WASHINGTON — Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to be a Supreme Court justice Thursday in the face of stiff opposition and mounting criticism about her qualifications.Bush said he reluctantly accepted her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down. He blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.
"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House -- disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said. "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers -- and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her."
The writing was on the wall for this one but I wasn't sure whether Miers was smart enough to see it. It took her awhile, but apparently she was. Miers just did the President Bush a big favor. Let's hope the Bush Administration quickly gets about the business of nominating a qualified jurist this time. Can you say Janice Rogers Brown?

Nightmare 1: I hope you conservatives know what your doing. Think about it. What if Bush holds a grudge and says "Since you screwed me, I will screw you," and asks Justice O'Conner to stay on until he leaves office?
2008 is not promised to the GOP. Wouldn't it be the GOP nightmare of the new century to have President Clinton Version II select the next Supreme Court Justice?
Nightmare 2: Let's say someone like an Owens or Brown is the next nominee. Will Senators have the testicular fortitude -near primaries and general elections-to vote for an ultraconservative judge? Republican infighting ruined Miers, not the "liberal groups" The left has all their bullets in the gun while the neocons used plenty of ammunition on friendly fire and now rifts as large as damaged levees exist now between the GOP's religious and fiscal conservative clans Who has more clout-The Limbaugh's and Coulter's or the Robertson's and Dobson's?
You have several pro-choice Republicans who can lose elections over abortion in 06. Especially since the non-religious republican women may agree that Roe v. Wade does not need to be overturned. It will be interesting to see.

Umm...considering President Bush is President for over three more years, I think he will have time to get a nominee in before the Jan 2009 inauguration. Also, if you guys run Hillary then 2008 is pretty much guaranteed to the GOP.

You speak wisdom, o leftish one.
Harriet Miers has acted honorably, unlike those who sought to destroy her nomination.
Since the president tried to present an actual conservative as a nominee and was thwarted by the very people he was trying to please, suppose he now actually picks someone who will be another O'Connor? You will have only your selves to blame.
And I would echo the sentiments that the 06 and 08 elections do not yet belong to the Republicans OR the conservatives. Should the evangelicals determine that their former friends in the conservative tent can no longer be trusted, it would not be a surprise to see secular conservatives snubbed at the polls by them.
Evangelicals have long been considered "poor, uneducated, and easy to command" by the mainstream media and the liberals. This nomination fight looked uncomfortably like many of our fellow conservatives agreed with those sentiments.
When conservatives come looking for the evangelical voter, they will have to rebuild a measure of trust. Whether they can convince the faithful that they aren't just using them for their votes has yet to be determined.

Too true. Whenever I hear democrats pining for Hillary in '08, I think "Is failure an addiction for these guys?" Then I've heard one democratic friend tremble at the thought of Guiliani running in '08...what a wacky subway series that would be! The only question about such a campaign would be "Who will lose harder?" But sadly, there is no hope that Republicans would be that stupid.

Nightmare 1, nightmare 2, nightmare 30. There's allways a possibly of failure, that shouldn't stop you from trying to do what you feel is right. What's the point of electing conservatives if they act like liberals? If they're all going to act like liberals anyway, screw it. Let the liberals have power. They're WAY more agreeable when they're in power, when they are denied they go moonbatty.
And republicans, it's starting to seem to me I actually like them much better when they're in the minority.
"Should the evangelicals determine that their former friends in the conservative tent can no longer be trusted"
Yup. But you never acknowledge the reverse (and nor would Hugh Hewitt), if the conservatives like me feel boxed out and the evangelicals can't be trusted, we can just as much damage by staying home.
"Since the president tried to present an actual conservative as a nominee and was thwarted by the very people he was trying to please, suppose he now actually picks someone who will be another O'Connor? You will have only your selves to blame."
Spoiled grapes Kerry. Now you're just being spiteful. You can say -
"Harriet Miers has acted honorably, unlike those who sought to destroy her nomination."
all you like, but I don't know where you get off saying people expressing honest opinions about issues they feel are important to the future of the country is dishonorable.
If anything is dishonorable it would be shutting up in that situation, to say nothing of assassinating thier character when they don't shut up like you told them to.
If you were of the same opinion, I can only HOPE you would have acted no differently.
"When conservatives come looking for the evangelical voter, they will have to rebuild a measure of trust"
Not to mention the fiscal-sanity voter, and the national security / stop the immigration insanity voter. And (he still hasn't nominated lutig) the 'no more goddamn souters' law voter...
If you want to jump ship, get in line. You're 2 square feet of the port deck isnt the only part of the boat sinking whether you acknowledge it or not.
I'm not the one who thinks you're stupid and easy to control Kerry. I'm not the one who said 'ignore those damnable eyes and "trust me"'.

....as you wallow in your ignorance!
Oh really, what do you think W did? In case you missed it, he kissed Karl's ass all the way to the White House and the evangelicals were left lying in the ruts of his politicaal wagon. Get a grip on reality Dr. Jacoby.

Those of us that fought the political battles of the last 40 years and turned a loosing party into a majority party, think that we might have a say in those issues that consern us.
The Suprimes is one of those issues. Most of you kids, I don't mean that as a perjoritive just a fact, don't remember the Earl Warren appointment.
We on the right do not want that to happen again, ever!
