The Rehnquist Effect

Amidst the chaos of hurricane relief, a political wild card has been dealt: vacancy #2 in the Supreme Court.

Michelle Malkin catalogs some rather dismal predictions by the right. I disagree.

I think the passing of Rehnquist and the double vacancy in the court will shift the liberal media's focus. As we move closer towards the hearings for the Roberts nomination, the MSM and liberal interest groups will really start to worry about the shelf life of Roe v. Wade, and will soon realize that the federal response to Hurricane Katrina was not dismal as it has been portrayed--and the facts of the matter will substantiate that. The waters will recede in New Orleans, and it will be rebuilt in a fashion typical of America. There will be a recovery--but Roe v. Wade could be overturned.

When it comes to Roe v. Wade, no other argument invokes more passion from the left--and they will rank and file. President Bush will do good to nominate Thomas or Scalia to Chief Justice, and fill the vacancy with the most conservative jurist possible. The left will then have no choice but to put their whining about federal hurricane relief on the shelf, so they can focus their efforts on attempting to derail the nomination process. They can't fight two wars simultaneously.

Face the facts of the matter, the blame for the federal hurricane is being wrongly directed at President Bush (when FEMA Director Michael Brown is more to blame if you were to blame anyone), and will soon join the other issues that were used to propagate impeachment chants from the left. They tried it with 9/11, the war on terror, the Plame incident, just about everything. This will join the others in its failed attempt.
