Dean's Latest Scream

The Left Wing of this country's body politic has Howard Dean as it's spokesman. Yesterday, Howard Dean characterized the Republican Party as a "white Christian party."

Ironically, Howard Dean is forgetting that he himself is a white Christian democrat, and formerly the governor of a state who's white population is nearly 97% (20 percentage points higher than the national average based on the 2000 census). Dean also said that the Democratic party is "more welcoming to different folks because that is the kind of people we are."

Let's do some research for Mr. Dean. A simple look at the exit polls from the 2004 election show that the Democratic Party is not very welcoming.

Here are the the kinds of folks from which President Bush and the Republican Party increased their support:

    Women: + 5 points
    Blacks: + 2 points
    Latinos: + 9 points
    Asians: + 2 points
    Jewish: + 6 points

All these groups, as well as others, have shown a trend of a change in their support from the Democrats to the Republican party. These upward shifts helped contribute to Bush's victory in 2004, and the continued downward spiral of the Democratic Party.

It is also fair to note that the so-called white Christian Republican party is headed by Ken Mehlman, a Jew, while the Democratic Party is headed by a white Christian.

I will conclude by stating that I am a registered Republican, and like the RNC Chairman, I am a Jew. So put that in your gefilte fish, Howard Dean.

Aaron has a good point that the DNC chair himself is a white Christian, while the RNC chair is Jewish. It is a bit ironic. It doesn't matter that the population of Dean's state is mostly white; he was not talking about Vermont, but about the Democratic party. I don't want to speak for Dean, and I don't particularly care for him as a "spokesman" for anything; he is a pro-business centrist who has learned how to tweak leftist rhetoric to appeal to certain types. I will say this, though: Republicans and evangelical Christians make strange bedfellows.

However, Aaron's post represents a misreading of statistics. Women +5, African-Americans +2... these figures are (presumably) comparisons of votes for Bush from 2000 to 2004, and they don't show that the Democratic party is "not very welcoming." The CNN poll doesn't show what the figures for Kerry (comparing 2004 to 2000) are, but clearly in 2004 Kerry has the edge over Bush in the African-American vote, the Asian-American vote, the Latino vote, low-income vote, and a slight edge in the female vote. I'm just setting the record straight on this poll, though; I don't agree with Dean about the Democratic party being "more welcoming." I think both major parties would like to welcome the votes of minorities and the poor, but neither of them really want to do anything for them.
