World Trade Center Freedom Tower To Be Redesigned

The proposed Freedom Tower for the World Trade Center in New York, will be redesigned as ordered by Governor Pataki.

It's back to the drawing board for the Freedom Tower at Ground Zero.

Gov. Pataki yesterday ordered up a complete redesign of the planned signature skyscraper in the wake of Police Department warnings about security risks.

The move is a major reversal of Pataki's promise to move rapidly to restore lower Manhattan's skyline with an "iconic" post-9/11 tower that would be the world's tallest building and a symbol of liberty.

Indeed, security is the primary concern, and ought to be considered quite carefully. It is maintained that the new design will be consistent with the master plan done by architect Daniel Libeskind, but not entirely.

Officials familiar with the decision say a new design by architect David Childs is expected within several weeks and will include a building that will rise 1,776 feet, like the original proposal from April 2003, but otherwise will "look a lot different."

Pataki's announcement followed a meeting yesterday with Mayor Bloomberg, the Police Department, developer Larry Silverstein and officials from the Port Authority and the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.

This all begs the question, why didn't they figure this out two years ago when the initial design was presented--this especially since the NYPD has been on the case of the Port Authority for some time now.

Sources have told The Post top NYPD brass had been pressing the Port Authority for nearly a year about their concerns regarding the safety of the building, which because of its planned height and symbolic nature could be a target of terrorists.

The NYPD report, which both identified problems and solutions, was sent early last month — finally forcing a second look at the Freedom Tower.

Charles Gargano, Pataki's top economic adviser and a vice chairman of the Port Authority, said: "I don't want to get into the blame thing. We have to move forward."

Daniel Libeskind gracefully accepted the changes. "Security is clearly the paramount concern," he said. "While the shape and details of buildings may change, the intent, spirit and direction of the master plan remains intact."

The new World Trade Center Freedom Tower is expected to be complete by 2010.

I live in Manhattan and I would hate to see the World Trade Center rebuilt as tall or taller that before. We have had the Trade Center attacked twice now. I don't know about the rest of you, but it would be moronic to rebuild any taller that about half the height of the previous buildings. If there are 3 to 4 buildings making up the new Center, I believe they all should be connected by bridges. The bridges should be constructed every so many floors, so people have an escape route in the next door building. Anyway, it is just my thought. Two attacks is two too many!

Maggie, I was in NYC on 9/11 and I couldn't disagree with you more. Skyscrapers are testaments to man's abilility to reach for the stars and symbols of american progress. After 9/11, should we dream half as high? Reach half as far? Always cower in fear that we may be attacked?

I think we should be building two towers twice as high.

mattk, most people here agree with you. I was here for both attacks, and I don't think I could feel safe, stepping foot in there, no matter what the size. Everytime I go by the site, I can't help but think of the memos Condi and Bush never read. " Bin Laden to attack in America with planes." I love that President, but he sure blew it big time on that one.

Posted by NYMaggie at May 7, 2005 09:54 PM

Yeah, perhaps a president should have paid more attention to those memos... like the PDB Clinton got on December 12, 1998 which said that bin Laden was planning to attack the US, possibly with airplanes.

you need to understand that threats against the united states are numerous, and if ever threat was followed through to the point of some major action, liberals would beg for the Patriot Act, as that would seem like small beans compared to the changes in lifestyle that would be required.

You are right Sam, the first time that warning came through was something like 1994 I think. At new war times.com, under "Unheeded Warnings" the following:

January 31, 2001: The U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century, a bipartisan commission put together in 1998 by then-President Bill Clinton and then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich, releases its final report. The report took 2 1/2 years to complete and makes 50 recommendations on combating terrorism in the United States. The Bush administration ignores all of them http://www.newwartimes.com/warnings.html

It was there a long time, sadly!

Posted by NYMaggie at May 7, 2005 10:29 PM

I agree that these warnings are too numerous to blame anyone for not heeding them. What's needed is quality intelligence. I think that this can also be seen in the WMD's in Iraq issue also. Most of the world’s intelligence agencies thought there were WMD's, quality intelligence may have told us there weren't (or if there were what has happened to them).

As for how the site is rebuilt I don't think bigger is necessarily needed better, but I don't think anyone should pay attention to my view - it's an American and New York decision to take account to your sensibilities.

Hi Brit! Great post. Unfortunately, the Clinton administration made our Intelligence stink. Whoa, no dealings with any unsavory characters! NYMaggie, you aren't fooling me.

Build 5 buildings, facing east, in the shape of a hand flipping the bird...but no matter what they build, I don't blame people for not wanting to work there.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 11:24 AM

ah yes...blame it on Clinton...the old standby excuse...

Posted by mattk [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 11:50 AM

Matt ignore them, Clinton at least sent cruise missiles after Osama.

Then all the Rushbots were crying "Wag the dog" because there was no legitimate reason to bomb Osama apparently.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 12:14 PM

Yep...a buncha cruise missiles sure worked....but to quote the all mighty matt: Ah yes...blame it [all] on [Bush]....the old stand by excuse.

If you think that the military OR the intelligence community was better after the 90's....well, you missed the decade, are ignorant of these institutions, or are just wearing blinders......but don't take my criticism as "laying blame".....for I am among the few that don't believe that, with the American thinking on 9/10/01, anything could've really been done to stop that day from occuring.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 01:53 PM

Ah yes...blame it [all] on [Bush]....the old stand by excuse.

Well Bush was the one is office at the time. If you want to go back to former Presidents why stop at Clinton?

Reagan's Administration after all did fund and train the Mujahadeen precursors to Al Quaeda.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 01:55 PM

Um, yeah- Why didn't I think of that, we SHOULD'VE let the Soviets take and keep Afghanistan, and for that matter, whatever else they wanted, or better still, should've attacked them with our own armed forces starting World War III...BRILLIANT!

Posted by Doug at May 9, 2005 04:08 PM

we SHOULD'VE let the Soviets take and keep Afghanistan,

Ever read Charlie Wilsons war?

A large part of the problem came from we handled it after the Soviets left, again laid at the feet of Reagan and Bush the first.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 04:53 PM

Yep....gotta bring this under obsession #4: Anything good in the past 30 years is because of Carter and Clinton.....anything "bad" is due to Nixon, Reagan, Bush, and Bush.

....ALL because UY said so.....got it...

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 05:13 PM

Mattk, Sorry, it's the truth.

Posted by Lisa [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 05:26 PM

Yeah, Clinton tried to "get" Usama. Except when he was offered to him, he was too wimpy to take him.

Posted by Lisa [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 05:28 PM

Carter, what a loser. The absolute worst Pres in my lifetime.

Posted by Lisa [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 05:29 PM

Lisa reffering to the Mansoor Ijiaz thing?

He had no more authority to offer Bin Laden than I.

And He was rewarded with a nice Fox News position for spreading that BS.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 05:38 PM

Mansoor wasn't the one that offered Bin Laden. For the love of Pete!

Posted by Lisa [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 05:45 PM

by the way, that is not his last name.

Posted by Lisa [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 05:46 PM

Lisa - Leave Pete out of this!

Posted by mattk [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 05:56 PM

Mansoor wasn't the one that offered Bin Laden.

Sorry it was Ijaz.

Im almost 100% sure thats the guy who gets reffered to involving the whole Sudan/Osama thing.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2005 06:18 PM

Half the things you say that you ARE 100% sure of are completely wrong, you don't think we'll trust your comments when YOUR not even sure they're true?

Posted by MJohnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2005 10:45 AM

And by 'half', I use it as an expression, not to signify that 50% of your comments are wrong, because in reality it's closer to 'almost 100%'.

Posted by MJohnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2005 10:46 AM

Mansoor Ijaz was the one who was involved in the Clinton/Osama/Sudan thing.

Note to MJ shut up you submoronic pansy.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2005 11:39 AM

Congratulations Um Yeah. You get one more right in the next 12 hours, and you'll be neck and neck with a broken clock.

I had all my money on the clock. Usually the score doesn't come this close.

Posted by MJohnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2005 01:35 PM

Shows how immature UY really is.....adults send memos, not notes. Notes are for infatuated 12 year olds.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2005 03:43 PM

Woo! May 11th. The clock won again.

Looks like I'm keeping my paycheck afterall.

Posted by MJohnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 11, 2005 04:39 PM

UY, Funny you should mention that we made a mistake in how we handled things after the Soviets pulled out- in other words, nothing. Isn't that what you wanted, and still want??? You're not helping your argument here.

Posted by Doug at May 12, 2005 02:41 AM

Isn't that what you wanted, and still want???

Um what I want is any of your hot female relatives ages 18 to 35 naked holding pizzas and beer at my place.

Uh What was your question again?

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 12, 2005 01:03 PM

No, no, no doug....we should've taken over Afghanistan and built a big oil pipeline so that UY could THEN be bitching about THAT. Typical....ask a question and get non-related bullshit from the juveniile Prince Liar.
