Small Blasts Rock British Consulate
Early this morning, around 3:50 am, two very unsophisticated explosive devices were detonated infront of the building which houses the British Consulate in New York City. The blast occured roughly the same time polls were opening in the UK for the general election.
Two small pre-dawn blasts shattered windows at the British consulate on Thursday as voters in Britain went to the polls in a general election, police said. There were no injuries reported. The explosions occurred shortly before 4 a.m. (9 a.m. British time) and were caused by two primitive metal "novelty grenades," one in the shape of a pineapple, the other a lemon, both packed with gunpowder, police on the scene said.
"There were some shattered windows and there are no injuries. We are investigating it," a New York Police Department spokesman said in an interview.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly refused to speculate as to a motive or intended target, and urged city-goers to go about their business as usual.
"There is at the moment nobody claiming credit for this, there were no calls saying why, the explosion, who the target was ... there is absolutely no reason to jump to a conclusion that any one floor of that building was a particular target at this time," the mayor said.
"Let me stress — we have no known motive for this action at this time," Kelly said.
Based on the initial reports of the objects used to perpetrate this vandalism/terrorism, it is seemingly clear this is not the work of an organized terror group, rather, an individual, or individuals who wanted to protest the election in the UK. I don't believe the devices were meant to injure anyone, but nonetheless, they very easily could have.
Surveillance cameras are being reviewed by investigators, and information will be given at the proper time.
As Britons go to the polls today, it is expected that Tony Blair's Labour Party will be victorious.
More on this story as it develops.

vandalism???!!! I wonder what the city, state, and federal laws are concerning the detonation of an explosive device in a major city (the fact that nobody was killed and only windows were damaged is irrelevant to these laws)...as opposed to local "vandalism" ordincances that the toothless Bloomberg has in mind. I'd surmise that this was the childish act of a small group of anti-war protestors....but even so, find 'em, try 'em, and punish them to the full extent of the law.

So people want to protest the democratic process in the UK. Idiots - in case they hadn't realised it people who were for the war in Iraq and people who were against it will be voting.
I rather like the idea that these people are using explosive fruit against us it add a note of absurdity.
On Labour winning - almost certainly, but it may just go to the Conservatives (the most right wing of our political groups) as so many people don't like Blair.
Internationally between the US and UK this would be interesting since Bush really doesn't seem to like Michael Howard who would then be PM. I'm off to vote now. Bye.

It's my guess that you're going for Tony. I wish "W" was subjected to what Tony is subjected to from the citizens of Great Britian. We could then see what he's made of. Good Luck WB.

Well, Brit....enjoy your freedom to vote. From what I've heard through the British on-line press, the "exit polls" are showing the same thing that American exit polls showed in OUR election....that someone other than Blair is winning.....but I think those polls are lying anyway, just as ours were. As for the explosives, it's my understanding that they took fake "novelty" or "replica" hand grenades and filled 'em with some sort of black powder.....and grenades were given names like pinenapple, lemon because of the shape and features of the grenades.....but some dumbass using explosive fruit would've been more humerous and less damaging.
Russ....imagine ANY POTUS having to go through the British procedure. I'm not gonna drop any names (of course I am), but Clinton would've had a difficult time as well.....as would've GHWBush and Reagan and Carter and Ford and Nixon....well, you get the picture.

My point; with the exception of Ford and "W" the rest could stand on there on (Ronnie could if Nacy was there) and "W" could't if his life depended on it. Duh...Uh, is the beginning of his sentences.
I'm waiting for somthing intellegent from "W" and with some details that will let America know that our best interest is at heart.
The British politicians sometimes take a beating from the press and the citizens. Up close and personal, and they must think on their feet.

Hi Russ & Sarge,
As to what I voted I'd need to give a hell of a long explanation to the British system of the British political system to explain who and why. But generally you're right, I'm hoping Labour win with a much reduced majority. Sarge there's a news shut down until 10 (5 pm on this board) on exit polls. I certainly hope your right on the exit polls the Conservatives are in total disarray and it would be a disaster if they win. If they do win you might see me throwing myself at the gates of Downing Street screaming "Noooo!" on your televisions tomorrow night.
I'm quite disappointed about the fruit, oh well - apparently the election party is still being held in the consulate tonight, we've had bloody years of training ignoring bombs.
On who's political leaders could crossover I'd say Bush Senior and Clinton would've stood the best chance here. I think Blair and Wilson would've stood the best chance over there (although not Wilson’s politics).
I'll probably drop back later to let you know how it's going.

I wasn't paying attention to who the reported party was ahead in the exit polls, but it wasn't Tony Blair. It could've been the Conservatives that were reported as winning in the exit polls...but as I see it now on-line, Labour has 44% to the Conservative 32%.....but again, as liberals found out last year....exit polls don't mean shit. You might have a media blackout....but that doesn't stop your exit polls from hitting the web.
As for ANY POTUS doing well under the firing-squad questioning, NO President would do well, even though there would be varying degrees of doing well and I can admit that W wouldn't be near the top. Clinton did very well with his media pets throwing softballs at him (until they got the Lewinsky scandal that they couldn't take a pass on)....but if he had to face the public, he'd have tried to sweet talk his way out of tough questions, use the typically diversionary political move of expertly changing the subject (straw-man), dancing all around it by throwing out red herrings (like the VRWC), and then finishing without actually answering the question...but answeering a different unrelated question(straw-man)....and that may get past his average supporter, but it wouldn't fly with someone like me asking the questions. I know what the definition of "is" is, afterall.

Hi Sarge,
Actually the politically sophicated don't do that well in nailing the politicians - the single issue passionates are the ones that tend to fry them.
Please to see the projection - it's just kicking off now - i'll checking now. The BBC are predicting a fair amount of chaos about safe seats and marginals - and the exit poll just in is ........ Lab Majority 66

A bit of a disaster for Labour and it could be the end of Blair if it's that bad.

It looks like Blair will win, but it is close. Wasn't it a British Newspaper that ran the big ad telling 59 million of us, how stupid we are? I wonder if we will see a "comeback" headline in one of our newspapers tomorrow?
Posted by NYMaggie at May 5, 2005 07:22 PM
What the NYT headline should be:
How can 14 British newspaper editors be so STUPID?

Not sure why you might say 14 British newspaper editors are stupid. Evil yes, stupid not so sure - as you can guess journalists don't have the highest reputations over here.
The electorate was frustrated more than anything else many wanted a Labour government but didn't want Blair and this was something that wasn't on the ballot paper. Today's papers are full of Labour backbench MP's saying Blair should go sooner rather than later - some think it will be in the next year (after the G8 meet in Scotland and the UK is chair of the EU so he can push Africa). Some believe it will be after the UK reject the EU constitution next year. Personally I suspect it will be in 2 and a half years which will give Brown 18 months before the next election and mean that he'll have his election during his "honeymoon" period - but his reduced majority will certainly put pressure on him. The Conservative leader has already announced he's going to go and there is no obvious replacement - they still look in total disarray. The Lib Dems who gained about 4% more nationally than last time didn't gain massively in seats and so people think they have missed a really opportunity to move forward significantly. The three big parties all have something positive to say but all seem to have missed out big time for one reason or another.
The real winners are the smaller parties but our system doesn't really help them out. We need real changes to our electoral system but of course the major parties won't do this because the system suits them. Politicians looking out for themselves - I bet that's an idea you've never come across in the US.
Since I've not heard any more about the exploding fruit I guess it's ok to go out of my flat and walk the streets of London again - phew that was a close one - not.
