Air America Under Investigation For "Gunshot" Skit

Air America, the failing and unsuccessful liberal radio network is under investigation by the Secret Service for a skit that aired Monday evening. Drudge Report has the story.

Government officials are reviewing a skit which aired on the network Monday evening -- a skit featuring an apparent gunshot warning to the president!
The announcer: "A spoiled child is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he is going to fix it for us. Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp: [audio sound of 4 gunshots being fired.] Just try it, you little bastard. [audio of gun being cocked]."

The audio production at the center of the controversy aired during opening minutes of The Randi Rhodes Show.

"What is with all the killing?" Rhodes said, laughing, after the clip aired.

"Even joking about shooting the president is a crime, let alone doing it on national radio... we are taking this very seriously," a government source explained.

An Air America official tells Billboard Radio Monitor that they have no comment and are conducting their own internal investigation.

We will follow this story as new information unfolds.

By what measure is Air America failing?

Also, they thank you for the advertising.

Everyone knows you don't joke about killing the president... at least on the air. And this isn't even a joke, really. If it was funny, I might be able to forgive it. Pretty stupid on their part.

air america is a wild success. why does the secret service spend their time investigating comedy skits and art exhibits in such an un-american manner? i guarantee if they continue the probe they will be smacked down for violating the first amendment and air america will benefit from the added press coverage.

Posted by billy at April 27, 2005 02:13 PM

Randi, Randi, Randi! What am I going to do with ya' girl? I suppose now I will have to hear about this from Katie, Mindy, and Ken over at the RNC.

Did the skit actually state the president, or just wimpy spoiled kid? They would have been better off using the sound of opening a pretzel bag.

Posted by Russ [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 27, 2005 02:22 PM

it is against the law to threaten the life of the president of the US.

Any president.

Posted by Sam at April 27, 2005 03:50 PM

I listened to the beginning of her show today, and she apologized. Her and her team actually didn't produce the piece and the first she heard of it was when it was introducing the show. She said she didn't think it was funny either.

Posted by Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 27, 2005 03:58 PM

has the right lost its marbles or are they just so devoid of ideas that this is all they can latch on to? you would have to be warped or a partisan hack to view that comedy skit as a threat on the president. bad taste, probably. protected by the first amendment. of course.

Posted by joe at April 27, 2005 05:01 PM

why would anyone in their right mind view the above quotes as a threat on the president? i guess when their leader is someone like tom delay, it is better to focus on irrelevant things and try to change the subject away from reality.

Posted by billy at April 27, 2005 05:44 PM

Joe--

it is against the law to threaten the life of the President of the United States. That is the law. Law.

You know that word? Law.

Posted by Sam at April 27, 2005 06:07 PM

Funny, billy, I remember little liberals just like you pitching a fit when Jesse Helms warned Clinton that the military might not appreciate him.

But suddenly, when rather overt threats with the sound of gunfire are made against a Republican (and following on a previous Rhodes call for a member of the Bush clan to kill Dubya), then all of a sudden it isn't a big deal. Thank you for once again showing why moral relativism is a moral failure.

By the way, Air America is a commerical radio disaster.

Ranking 23rd in the NYC market, Air America is bombing in what is supposed to be a liberal stronghold. Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, O'Reilly, and just about everyone else. Nationwide, they aren't doing much better.

You don't get things right very often do you, billy? BTW, you get fringe benefits, not French benefits.

Posted by Confederate Yankee at April 27, 2005 06:33 PM

Air America: By losers for losers. It must be frustrating to be so consistently wrong about EVERYTHING and be such losers. So frustrating it drives you crazy, so frustrating it drives you to make threats against the president of the United States.

Posted by Steve [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 27, 2005 06:56 PM

i checked those ratings at arbitron. air america is unchanged. druggie limbaugh's station, wabc, is down 20%. sounds like druggie's station is failing. spin that one rightie.

Posted by billy at April 27, 2005 06:58 PM

Sam, I repeat again, only a moron would view that as a threat against the president. It is a comedy skit on national radio. It proves my point, the right is so scared and devoid of ideas, and so unable to respond to Air America's sucess this year in expanding across the country, that they truly want to believe that this is a criminal act. If you want to find criminal threats just look up some of Tom Delay's recent speeches. Those, im afraid, are not comedy skits.

Posted by joe at April 27, 2005 07:03 PM

i don't remember how Tom DeLay got into this picture...

i suppose the scores of hippie protesters who hang and burn effigies of the President are just doing a skit too?

I doubt you'd be so non chalant if your higher than now Bil CLinton was the president being threatened.

Posted by Sam at April 27, 2005 07:08 PM

Here is the LAW rightwingers read it and weep.

"Joking about shooting the President certainly isn't a crime as such; threatening to shoot the President is. Threats (whether against the President or not) are indeed constitutionally unprotected, but to be a punishable threats, a statement must at least be understood by a reasonable listener as a true threat, rather than just hyperbole (or humor)."

Posted by joe at April 27, 2005 07:17 PM

Why, because this site is all about being ethical and moral. While a topic like this is a choice, the black sheep is kept in the closet.

The LAW, sure lets talk about Tom Delay.

Posted by Russ [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 27, 2005 07:45 PM

Confed Yankee - While your post is largely grammatically correct, I am having much trouble understanding it.

What does a bad joke have to do with Clinton's relationship with the military?

Put some numbers behind your comment about Air America. My google search only turned up comments about how they were either competitive or beating their competition. For a one year old radio network, that doesn't sound like failure.

As for the french insults...lets grow up. Everytime you insult the french, lady liberty sheds a tear (after all, it was a gift from the french)

Posted by mattk [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 27, 2005 09:00 PM

I heard the bit, not skit, (there is a difference, look it up)on Monday. It was not the funniest piece produced by the show. However, I did not hear any mention of Bush, threats to Bush or any other political leader. I heard the phrase that referred to a "spoiled child." That could be indicative of anyone, it does not single out the president. Why is everyone in such an uproar about this bit? No one seemed to pay much attention to Ann Coulter when she wrote about President Clinton and whether to impeach or assassinate him. I think the bit on Randi Rhodes show was no where near the "gunshot warning" that Ann Coulter espoused not so long ago. And I am just curious to know why you think Air America is "failing and unsuccessful." By my account, I believe that it is carried in over 53 markets, and I believe 9 of the 10 largest markets in the US. Also, it is surprising how many "conservatives" listen to the show. Perhaps they are fed up with the lies that are spewed daily from the right wing punditry. Maybe they have just had enough of your kool aid.

Posted by Red at April 27, 2005 10:36 PM

Air america is a wild success?

You must not be getting the same news that I get. Either that, or you have a full-on case of denial going.

As for Lady Liberty? She's here for the same reason the rest of our forefathers were. She was willing to sail across the ocean, settle in the wilderness, and go to war. WHATEVER it took to get the hell away from France. Farther the better.

Posted by MJohnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 28, 2005 08:53 AM

Statistics clearly show that Air America Radio is neither failing nor unsuccessful. Furthermore, it appears that it is not under investigation by the secret service! Once again the question is raised: If conservatives are right, why do they have to lie so much?

Posted by mattk [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 28, 2005 10:20 AM

joe....that's not the LAW that you cited....that's someone's thoughts on the LAW. If you need someone to do the hard work for you then fine. HERE'S the LAW

Title 18 US Code 871(a) Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both
.....and its not a violoation of anyone's 1A rights in such an instance if the Secret Service feels they need to take a look into this non-case. Their job is to protect the POTUS and they take it quite seriously.

As for Air America being a "wild success", you need to get outside your little circle and look at the numbers. In NYC, they started off with Spring '04 ratings at a 1.3 share of those over 12. Now, the ratings for Winter '05 give them a 1.2 share of those over 12. Just looking at their target demograph as they claim (25-54 years), in the Spring '04 ratings, they got a 2.2.....and in the Winter '05 they FELL TO 1.4.....and we're talking NEW YORK CITY.

......and you lump that into the "wildly successful" category?

I was listening this day and I heard Randy discrediting this type of air discussion, so what's your problem? Worse than this is said everyday, all day, by your ultra conservative talk show hosts.

Posted by Barbara Sena at April 28, 2005 07:37 PM

Rush is the king of talk radio, absolutely the highest ratings of anyone. Air America is unfortunately failing. Actually Billy, their ratings have changed, for the worse. They were none too good before. They went from a 1.2 down to a 0.1 in the last year. This is at their FLAGSHIP station in New York. You know New York City? Liberal bastion?

Posted by Lisa [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 28, 2005 08:48 PM

Oh.........I thought that this was a neutral site....this is where the knuckledraggers hang out.I can pass out band-aids to all of you for standing on your knuckles all of the time.Pass the skoal you inbred bastards.... you half-brained,inbred bastards want to debate.

Posted by Jim Frye at April 29, 2005 09:32 AM

Really Barbara...conservative talk shows commit felonies every day, all day? You DO know that threatening the life of the POTUS is a felony, right?

Jim...evidently you cannot read. This site clearly states, under the banner, that it is CONSERVATIVE NEWS AND OPINION....and you lame ad hominems just show that yoiu have nothing to say.

Lisa, your numbers are slightly incorrect. Air America went from a 1.3 share last year to a 1.2 share this year in the NYC market....DOWN 0.1...not down TO 0.1....and Rush got a 2.7 share even in the rotten apple.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 29, 2005 11:06 AM

Sarge, I stand corrected. It still stinks!

Posted by Lisa [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 29, 2005 11:42 AM

"Really Barbara...conservative talk shows commit felonies every day, all day? You DO know that threatening the life of the POTUS is a felony, right?"

First of all, secret service is looking into it, and I doubt felony charges will be brought against the station.

Second, conservatives are not adverse to using this kind of bad humor, as Ms. Bad Humor herself proved in the 90s when she wrote about Clinton... "I don't know whether to impeach him or assasinate him."

Off the topic of the president, there's also this gem:

"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building."

Then this by Rush:

"I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus - living fossils - so we will never forget what these people stood for." Rush Limbaugh, Denver Post, 12-29-95

Posted by Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 29, 2005 11:46 AM

"Ms. Bad Humor" refers to Coulter.

Posted by Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 29, 2005 11:51 AM

Every day all day? I choose my words carefully so dinks like UY cannot twist them around....and I will call others on lame generalities as well. For ONE...Miss Coulter is not an ultra conservative talk show host.

Of course nothing will be done about this....and nothing SHOULD be done (except whatever internal reprimands they feel need to be carried out or not). I heard the bit and though I felt it was extremely close to being a felony (close enough for the SecService to look into it, but not charge anyone)...it was more of a really really misguided attempt at really really bad humor...bordering on felonious enough to qualify, but not be charged. However, there's a distinct difference between WONDERING about killing the POTUS and directly saying "If you touch SocSec here's what you're gonna get (with the sounds of gunfire and a cocked hammer)....so go ahead." One could argue that they could've been talking about anyone...but anyone with a shred of integrity knows damned well who they're talking about (the ONLY spoiled rich guy that's been on a 60 city tour to tout his plan to touch SocSec). Rush's quote is in bad humor taste....but it's also such a generality (all liberals) that it's absurd, not bordering on felonious as Barbara would have me believe right-wing radio does EVERY DAY, ALL DAY. On another note....I tried to find the "assasinate him" quote you attribute to Coulter....and it came up empty. Where'd she write it?

Can Miss Coulter use the Franken "It was just satire" defense?

Posted by Sarge at April 29, 2005 01:39 PM

I'm not sure exactly where it was from, I found the quote on a Web site, and have heard others talk about it. I don't really have time right now to search for it... maybe later.

One thing I'd like to know is, in regards to Franken's "It was just satire" defense, what exactly did he use that defense on?

Posted by Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 29, 2005 02:52 PM

Franken used that defense on EVERY lie in his book that he got called on. "I'm a satirist, it was just satire." I think it was on Russert's show that he started it. First, he portrays his book as "the truth" (as opposed to the lying liars and their lies) and when he gets called on his lies, he turned to the "it was just satire" meme.

I only asked about the Coulter quote because it came up empty on Google.

Posted by Sarge at April 29, 2005 03:47 PM

Franken used that defense on EVERY lie in his book that he got called on.

Ive seen a lot of these and all I saw really were jokes.

Sarge has no sense of humor, or is faking reading comprehension.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 29, 2005 04:42 PM

Did UY just add an intelligent comment? Didn't think so. Franken lied his ass of and EVERY time he was asked to back up an alleged fact (read: lie) especially by those he was accusing of lying, he claimed it was all satire...he was a satirist, afterall.

...but if all you have is the "i have nothing to say" ad hominem one-liner.....well, that's just you.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 30, 2005 07:22 PM

Sarge,

You repeatedly say franken lies without showing any proof, you also say he lies and defends himself by saying his book was satire. I'd be very interested in seeing EXACTLY what lie he defended by saying it's satire. I have a suspision it's something that any reasonable/intelligent person would know is not true.

Posted by Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2005 09:24 AM

Al Wanken's idea of satire is "You're a big fat lying liar doodyhead!"

Posted by zetetic at May 1, 2005 11:25 AM

Franken lied his ass of and EVERY time he was asked to back up an alleged fact.

Put up or shut up. The last time we had this debate you linked me to a very hacktackular site itslef riddled with inaccuracies.

Some of the "lies" REALLY ARE jokes do you know what a joke is? Want me to define it for you.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2005 11:27 AM

UY, you are irrelevant and have bought into the whole "I'm a satirist" defense of someone that claims to have written a book exposing all the Lying Liars and the Lies they Tell.

DEBUNK it....but UY doesn't like THAT site, so it must be full of shit...UY makes the rules, ain't that right Mikey?.

OOps...forgot how irrelevant you are.

Posted by Sarge at May 2, 2005 10:51 AM

I have already debunked it in the past. I saw as many inaccuracies on those scant pages as are reported to be in Frankens whole entire book.

Um Yeah, Al Franken is a liar. Ann Coulter proved it.

Posted by MJohnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 2, 2005 03:43 PM

Ann Coulter proved it.

Where?

Ann Coulter is the biggest liar of them all so why believe her?

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 2, 2005 04:03 PM

This thread is starting to remind me of the old Buffalo Springfield song:

"There's battle lines bein' drawn. Nobody's right if everybody's wrong."

And

"A thousand people in the street Singin' songs and a-carryin' signs Mostly sayin' hooray for our side."

Posted by Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 2, 2005 04:16 PM

UY....YOU HAVE NEVER "DEBUNKED" ANYTHING. You simply pointed me to a site that "claimed" to debunk it....which I then debunked point by point until I got tired of wasting my time with you. Wheras, YOU are too intellectually lazy to actually do it yourself.

...but the golden rule is: If UY says it, it's gotta be true.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 3, 2005 11:08 AM

....actually, scratch that last post since it involved your laziness in dealing with a debunking of Moore's lies, not Franken's lies....concerning Franken, all you did was claim that, not only was the site a joke, but certain lies pointed to were "jokes." Of course, you only pointed to #6, 9, and 20 (DISREGARDING THE OTHER 21 LIES)....calling them "jokes" without saying WHY you bullshittingly claim they're jokes.....the golden rule must apply (whatever UY says goes without question). ...and, of course, going along with the "Franken put them in his book as jokes"..."It was satire" defense. Good for you, parrot.

UY's attempt to debunk something:

It was a joke, it was a joke, "You guys are such dishonest scumbags I feel dirty typing in your general direction."

Properly analyzed to be: baseless statement, baseless statement, ad hominem attack.

...and, yeah, I really really did read it...twice...once straight through and once going lie by lie.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 3, 2005 11:23 AM

YOU HAVE NEVER "DEBUNKED" ANYTHING.

I myself pointed out numerous inaccuracies on that site.

So yes I did debunk a lot of it.

Most of the "lies" are jokes, the fact that you are willing to lie and say he was completely serious id your problem.

As for the references concerning almost every other lie involves one book by richard miniter and thats it, some painstaking research.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 3, 2005 05:25 PM

I have just debunked Um Yeah's last comment line by line and proved that it is all lies.

Posted by MJohnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 4, 2005 12:10 PM

So by simply saying "Its a joke(the site)" "number 6 is clearly a joke" "#9 is a joke" "#20 is a joke" and almost all of the rest involve only one reference....plus the typical ad hominems....THAT's called a "debunking" in UY's world of Absurdistan? Now....your current lie on the table is:

As for the references concerning almost every other lie involves one book by richard miniter and thats it, some painstaking research.
Sure...I could'v eused YOUR style and just told you that yuou are full of shit.....but I enjoy actually going there and checking every one of Franken's lies' references and, not only is there not a single one of them that uses ONLY Miniter's book, but his book was also used ONLY to reference lie #1 (that's probably as far as you got), and lie #4 (the 5th reference). That's it LIAR...2 of Franken's lies that used Miniter as a reference, but not the sole reference. So you debunked lies #6, 9, and 20 by calling them "a joke" and you lie about the rest because you're too intellectually lazy to do a little looking. So, 3 were jokes, I'll give you the 2 you want as "involving one book" (which is a lie, but I'll give it to ya for free)........what about the OTHER 19 LIES? You've got a lot of gaul to even say "some painstaking research" after what you just spewed with ZERO research.

Amateur...

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 4, 2005 04:03 PM

.....awaiting your next ad hominem.

So by simply saying "Its a joke(the site)" "number 6 is clearly a joke" "#9 is a joke" "#20 is a joke" and almost all of the rest involve only one reference....plus the typical ad hominems....THAT's called a "debunking" in UY's world of Absurdistan?

Because I do not have the resources or the inclination to drill the whole entire "joke" concept to you.

It is not worth the time. Believe whatever you want to believe.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 5, 2005 12:38 PM

Okay....so you're gonna just accept that you lied....good for you....progress and all. Nice job using the defense of those that know they're wrong....."It's not worth the time (2 minutes it took me)" and "believe what you want to believe" (I'll take the truth, thank yoiu...something you just got bagged NOT telling).

Your answer should have been "...because I'm too lazy to actually look at the references posted with each frankenlie....so I'm gonna just tell a lie about them and hope it flies." (but it did not fly and now you're floundering away trying to find a way out of the lie)

What a coward you are.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 5, 2005 04:14 PM

so you're gonna just accept that you lied..

Not really like I said your whole case rests on the fact that you dont get most jokes.

As I see it the problem is on your end.

Posted by Um Yeah [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 5, 2005 06:20 PM

As for the references concerning almost every other lie involves one book by richard miniter and thats it, some painstaking research.

THAT, my intellectually challenged minion, is called a lie that you made up because you were too lazy to do some "painstaking research" of your own that would've taken 2 or 3 minutes. OF course the "problem" is always on someone else's end, for YOU are a perfect liar....even when they're pointing out your lies, it's their own fault. Flounder away, as usual...child.

Posted by Sarge [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 6, 2005 08:37 AM

Not intended to give my opinion of the health of WLIB, but it most recently ranked 24th behind 4 different "Spanish" stations.

As far as lying... One must knowingly use information one knows to be false in order to "lie". Ignorance is not lying. Ridiculously stupid (uninformed) people really can't lie. It's impossible!
