Jews For Bush: Joe Lieberman?
Eh, not quite... but as close as he can get to it.
While Lieberman endorsed Kerry's candidacy, he made some startling comments yesterday.
Lieberman, with just three weeks left before the election, praised Bush strongly for his support of Israel, America’s lone democratic ally in the Mid-East."We are dealing with a president who's had a record of strong, consistent support for Israel. You can't say otherwise,” Lieberman told an audience of 600 near Delray Beach, Fla, the Palm Beach Post reported in editions Thursday.
Lieberman also added that any criticism of Bush vis-à-vis Israel would be “unjustified.”
But Lieberman indicated Kerry’s support among Jews may be softer, and he chided the Democratic nominee for not coming out more strongly for Israel.“And I think John Kerry, to reassure people, has to himself be explicit" rather than having surrogates deliver the message, the Post quoted Lieberman as saying.
Lieberman alluded to worries among Jews about Kerry’s position on Israel. Lieberman bluntly revealed that he has asked the Kerry campaign to have John Kerry himself discuss his views on Israel because "only John Kerry can eliminate those doubts."
Lieberman made clear he is still staunchly supporting Kerry for president.
This is probably the most Lieberman can say while still having a future with the Democratic Party. It's interesting to see a Democrat, a Jewish Democrat no less, express concerns over Kerry's ability to keep a grasp on the Jewish vote, and show worry about his stance--or lack there of--on Israel. This topic has been discussed before over at Blogs For Bush before, and will likely be a point for discussion after the election.

"Lieberman made clear he is still staunchly supporting Kerry for president."
Aw. Too bad the debates are over, or President Bush could say, "and people in your party, like Joe Lieberman, think you're not strong enough on Israel," just like Kerry kept invoking the magical name of John McCain to prove he's not a leftist.
Lieberman's not long for this party. Either he'll leave, pull a Zell by 2008, or get purged and marginalized by the Clinton brigades. Watch for it.

Joe Lieberman can’t knock Bush’s support for Israel, but I can.
Creating yet another Islamic fundamentalist country in the Middle East is not my idea of helping Israel. And that is what Bush has done with his mismanagement of Iraq. With no strong, secular leader waiting in the background, it was unreasonable to think that destroying Iraq’s government would bring anything but instability and insurrection followed by an Islamic seizing of power.
Sleeping with the Saudis is not my idea of helping Israel. The Bush-Saudi connection goes back generations. It was Saudi funding, not business acumen, that made George a rich man.
Allowing Iran to build a nuclear arsenal is not my idea of helping Israel.
Yes, Bush supports Sharon. But what has that support accomplished? Is Israel any closer to peace and security? No American president can change the status quo until we wean ourselves from a dependence on Middle Eastern oil. I’m taking the first step toward that: voting for John Kerry.
